Hi, I'm looking for a cell phone for my 13 year old. Preferably 'Pay as You Go'. This will be her first phone, is there anything I should be aware of regarding type of phone, additional charges or service provider? I've been hessitant to get her one but now that she is more independant off with her friends more I am reconsidering the idea. Any advice or shared experience would be greatly appreciated.Unsure

Prepay is a very good option. Your teen can easily purchase additional minutes on wireless prepaid card for many prepaid carriers (including Virgin, Boost, KIC, TMo to Go and more) at local 7-11 stores, and etc.

Thanks so much for the response teleguy,

Would you happen to know if prepaid plays second fiddle to contract phones in regard to overall quality of calls connected, dropped etc. I'm from western Canada and it seems we are pretty limited in our choice of carriers.

If a major carrier (one that owns a nationwide network) offers both post paid and prepaid plans, the calls are generally always going to be indistinguishable as to quality, etc. They will route them together over the same network in the same manner.

If you choose a prepaid wireless carrier that is not the owner of it's own network and has to buy time to place your calls, then your calls may not always go over the same network each time (unless they have an exclusive arrangement. example Virgin Mobile USA exclusively routes calls over the Sprint network), so quality could differ significantly.

For a pay as you go phone I can't tell ya enough how much I love the Kajeet. I got one last year and have given it to my son. I love that after all the time is up he can't go over. Woo hoo!
