Hi,

I read several news articles that police in United Arab Emirates are arresting people who sends porn sms's , even via bluetooth. Police says they have a device for tracing the sender of the material.

Now, I'm sure they can, but to what extent ? does anybody knows of these devices the police are using , what is their range ? can they caught you even if you are miles away from any public area ?

If it is illegal to send this material over the public airwaves (as it is in many countries of the world, not just in the Middle East), just don't send it.

Yes anything you send via an RF signal is traceable by someone with an RF receiver on the same frequency if they want to do it. Since Bluetooth devices all share a common frequency, there's no guesswork where to hunt for your signal, is there?

teleguy,

thanks for responding, I'm kind of new at this so please excuse my ignorance for asking this : I thought that bluetooth phones will "at best" recieve or send a signal 100 metres away only ! so how can they pick up a signal miles away ?

The range is something I did not address. The effective range of Bluetooth is considerably less than 100 meters.

It is very doubtful that anyone would try to monitor usage from a great distance, but not unlikely at all in my view that they may be sitting next to you on a bus or at a cafe.
