i am currently a sprint customer and i want to change my phone. everything that print offers kind of sucks. i have checked out the 'unlocked' phones and found some cool ones that i really like. if i buy one, how do i get sprint to transfer my number and contract to that phone?

Any carrier should be able to port your # if you ask them. (However, your contract is not portable. If you are still under contract you may have to repay the $150 rebate Sprint gave you on your phone.)

Just curious though, since Sprint has a wide selection of phones including all the Sanyo phones which JD Power & Assoc. rated #1 in Customer Satisfaction for 2004: what feature exactly is it that you didn't find available in a Sprint phone?
