Actually if you call sprint and tell them you found the phone they will likely ask you to turn the phone on and give them the phone number belonging to that phone. Then they will probably ask you to return it to sprint so that they can return it to thier customer.
Which is not a bad thing. It's the right thing to do in a situation like yours. I know that if it were my phone I would want it back asap.
