OVERLAND PARK, Kan. January 12, 2004 - Sprint (NYSE: FON, PCS) announced today that it has signed a four-year agreement to continue providing voice and data services to Smithfield Foods (NYSE: SFD), a leading processor and marketer of fresh pork and processed meats in the United States. This builds on a two-year relationship during which time Sprint has provided Smithfield with voice, frame relay, IP (Internet Protocol), Dial IP, switched digital, audio and video conferencing and wireless services, and will now benefit from Sprint Email Protection Services.

"We're very pleased with the quality of customer service and we estimate that we'll save over $1 million through this new, broader contract," said Mansour Zadeh, vice president and chief information officer, Smithfield Foods. "Our account team is responsive to our needs and we feel this will only be enhanced by the transformation taking place at Sprint which will centralize our account team and more easily allow us to consider integrated wireline and wireless data solutions."

As the primary provider of data services for Smithfield Foods, Sprint IP and frame relay will provide Smithfield Foods with secure and reliable connectivity between their various facilities across the country. Such high-speed data connectivity allows Smithfield Foods employees to run enterprise applications, access email and conduct business with vendors and customers in a secure and efficient manner.

Given concerns about the rising volume of spam email, Smithfield Foods is also using Sprint Email Protection Services to block spam from entering the corporate network infrastructure or reaching the corporate email servers, thus reducing the time lost sorting through spam by their employees.

"Smithfield Foods is a rapidly growing company, so Sprint's overall portfolio and the specific solutions we're providing them are easily able to grow with them over time," said Tom Jensen, regional vice president, Sprint Business - Southeast. "And, as they described, Sprint's re-alignment to focus on better meeting customer needs through an integrated product portfolio will make it easier for Smithfield Foods to do business with us."
