Rogers crowns Canada's top gamers -- Global gaming craze sweeps nation as thousands vie for one of three
national titles in the 2005 Rogers PWR PLAY Gaming Championships --

TORONTO, May 12 /CNW/ - Rogers announces the winners of the 2005 Rogers
PWR PLAY Gaming Championships, the first combined gaming championships from
Rogers Wireless, Rogers Yahoo! Hi-Speed Internet, and Rogers Video. The three
winners, Raven Ventnor of Edmonton, Alberta, David Dubuisson-Lebon from Laval,
Québec, and Simon Martel of Chomedey, Québec, earned the top scores in the
mobile, Internet and console gaming categories respectively and were each
awarded $5,000.
"I'm totally psyched about winning and I loved these events," said
Dubuisson-Lebon, 2005 Rogers PWR PLAY Gaming Championships winner. "I got to
visit Toronto for the first time, and the fact that I won some serious cash
doing something I love is awesome. Also, I can now say I'm a national gaming
champ!"
The 2005 Rogers PWR PLAY Gaming Championships culminated in Toronto last
Saturday, May 7th, on the heels of regional tournaments across the country.
Cheered on by hundreds of fans, six finalists from the thousands of regional
participants competed in three head-to-head showdowns to determine national
Rogers Wireless, Rogers Yahoo! Hi-Speed Internet and Rogers Video champions.
One lucky finalist, Khalil Omar from Ottawa, Ontario, won a trip for four to
the Disneyland(R) Resort in California. Increasing the energy at this elite
title fight, the 2005 Juno Award winning band Billy Talent treated guests to a
live set to help celebrate the occasion.
"Rogers is the ultimate destination for gamers and the 2005 Rogers PWR
PLAY Gaming Championships is just one of the ways we bring gaming to Canadians
in the format they prefer," said John Boynton, Vice President, Marketing,
Segmentation, Rogers Wireless. "You can rest assured Rogers Wireless will
continue to deliver the hottest mobile games right to the palms of hungry
gamers who want to play wherever they are."
"The response to the 2005 Rogers PWR PLAY Gaming Championships was
overwhelming," said Terry Canning, Vice President and General Manager, Rogers
Internet for Rogers Cable, Inc. "As the gaming industry continues its rapid
growth, Rogers Yahoo! Hi-Speed Internet is pleased to offer the ultimate
Internet gaming experience for gaming enthusiasts who crave speed."
"We're thrilled with the success of this program," said Daniel Langevin,
Vice President, Marketing & Merchandising, Rogers Video. "With programs like
the 2005 Rogers PWR PLAY Gaming Championships plus our strategic alliance with
EB Games, Rogers Video remains a forerunner in the Canadian gaming industry."
Competition was intense throughout the 2005 Rogers PWR PLAY Championships
with scores surpassing organizers' expectations. Competitors for the Rogers
Video Championship title participated in the console game Gran Turismo(TM) 4,
the latest PlayStation(R)2 release offering a truly authentic car racing
experience. Rogers Yahoo! Hi-Speed Internet finalists went head-to-head in the
Internet game Madden NFL 2005 by EA Sports, offering groundbreaking graphics
that capture the real football stadium experience. Rogers Wireless finalists'
title fight included competition in the mobile game The Incredibles, based on
the Walt Disney Pictures presentation of a Pixar Animation Studios film of the
same name, and Rogers Word Jumble, a text messaging-based game.
Rogers carries a unique distinction as one of the only companies in
Canada to offer gaming across PC, wireless and console platforms, and hosts
this annual program in response to the unstoppable growth of the gaming
industry. Over 3.5 million Canadian households have one or more game
consoles(*), online gamers spend an average of 6.1 hours per week playing(xx),
and Rogers Wireless alone saw a 300% increase in Java game downloads in 2004.
