I've heard that Fido has appaling reception.
I'm currently on Bell, but I really want to switch to Fido for their better phones and their new Fido-to-Fido promo plan (I'm thinking of getting the Nokia 6670).
I live in Burnaby, and travel often to Vancouver and Coquitlam/PoCo. In the near future I will also be using it at university as well (most likely UBC or SFU).
Will I get good reception? Or should I just suck it up that Bell doesn't have any cool phones and stick with them?

Hi Meg,

You're doing it right asking as many folks as you can. Find those who have actually experienced the coverage in the very same areas where you will be.

Just because Carrier A gets "great" or "lousy" coverage in one area doesn't mean it's that way all over.

Talk to folks in the same buildings in Vancouver and Coquitlam that you go to. Talk to folks on the campus at the two universities.

Of course reception can be affected by the model of phone as well; so someone with Brand A on Carrier A may have a great experience while his neighbor with Brand B phone on Carrier A may not.

So take notes as you talk to folks. Really.

If you do decide to give Fido, (or any other new carrier) a try, be sure to take full advantage of their grace period. Fido's is 15 days, I think.

Time your purchase so that you can, within the grace period, fully test out the new service in all the places you want it to work.

If it's bad right away, get back to the store right away and trade in for a different brand and model of phone and use it during the grace period.

If not satisfied, do not stay; no matter what the salesman says, "Oh yes we've had some maintenance issues lately, but those should clear up soon." "Oh but you know there is a new tower going up in your neighborhood next month." "It's a software glitch with a new phone, but once it's 'broken in' it will work fine, you'll see."

Good luck finding what you want and be sure to report back the details of some of your experiences here so many others can benefit from your added knowledge.
