January 26, 2004 - Sony Ericsson today announced the extension of an on-board TCP/IP stack across its family of GSM/GPRS M2M products, further facilitating the development of cost-effective machine-to-machine (M2M) applications. This will allow users to maximize the benefits of GPRS data communications (always on/always connected) across a variety of wireless data applications including point-of-sale, telemetry, and Internet applications.

On-board TCP/IP is already available in the GR and GT product ranges, and is now also available in the GM product range (GM28/29 and GM47/48). Sony Ericsson’s implementation of TCP/IP directly onto its GSM/GPRS M2M products means that system integrators will no longer be required to develop and implement their own TCP/IP stack. This will allow them to focus on simplified application development and on how they can use their chosen M2M product to add value to their core business. It represents a paradigm shift in the ease of use of GPRS data communications by incorporating all the connection protocols necessary for a user to quickly and seamlessly get connected to the Internet.

The TCP/IP stack is the most common networking standard seen today. TCP/IP is a suite of networking protocols, and additional higher-level protocols and functions are needed in order to make efficient use of the potential offered by the GPRS network.

Sony Ericsson has addressed these challenges by implementing an on-board TCP/IP solution into its M2M products such that an external implementation is no longer required. All that is required is that the system integrator provides some basic subscription data in order to realize the true power of a TCP/IP standard Socket driven interface. The Socket interface allows for easy sending and receiving of data under AT-command control so even existing applications can quickly and seamlessly be upgraded to include TCP/IP. This feature is also available through embedded applications with the use of M2mpower, a support environment designed to facilitate the development of cost-effective wireless M2M applications.

The release of on-board TCP/IP reaffirms Sony Ericsson’s commitment to providing more cost-effective solutions for a wide variety of customers. Anders Franzén, Corporate Vice President for M2M at Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications, says: “The implementation of TCP/IP to our GSM M2M products automatically deals with many of the complexities brought about by wireless communications and greatly reduces the time taken to deliver an application to market.”

Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB offers mobile communications products for people who appreciate the possibilities of powerful technology. Established in 2001 by Telefonaktiebolaget LM Ericsson and Sony Corporation, the joint venture continues to build on the success of its two innovative parent companies. Sony Ericsson creates value for its operator customers by bringing new ways of using multimedia communications while mobile. The company’s management is based in London, and has 4,000 employees across the globe working on research, development, design, sales, marketing, distribution and support.
