The mobile communication group at Siemens AG – Siemens mobile – has increased its share in Symbian Software Limited from 4.8 to 8.4 percent. At the same time, Siemens takes a share in Symbian's capital increase. In total, Siemens has invested around a further 30 million euros in Symbian. This reinforces the significance of the operating system for mobile phones, Symbian OS. For the so-called smartphones – devices that combine the classical functions of a mobile phone with those of PDAs and PCs – it is crucial that the operating system offers an open platform on which applications from different developers and providers can be installed and operated. The more applications there are for a smartphone, the more varied the ways in which the device can be used. Moreover, the use of an open operating system such as Symbian ensures compatibility between devices from different manufacturers, but based on the same platform. "The smartphone market will grow significantly in the coming years. We expect smartphones to make up a quarter of the entire mobile phone market in the year 2008", says Rudi Lamprecht, Member of the Managing Board of Siemens AG. Siemens is already offering a Symbian-based device, the Siemens SX1. Just recently Version SX1 Music of this smartphone was launched on the market. The SX1 Music allows complete songs to be downloaded and played in hi-fi stereo quality. Alongside Siemens, the following companies are also shareholders in Symbian: Ericsson, Sony Ericsson, Nokia, Panasonic, and Samsung.
