Munich, Dec 10, 2003 - The mobile communication group at Siemens AG Siemens mobile for short is expanding the GSM mobile phone network in Burkina Faso. The West African country today has approximately 220 000 mobile phone users. Following the expansion, around 50 000 new customers will be able to make mobile calls in Telmob's network, the mobile subsidiary of the state-owned telecom Onatel. Telmob is the leading mobile provider in Burkina Faso and today has around 85 000 customers. Telmob offers mobile telephony primarily in the cities of Ouagadougou and Bobo-Dioulasso, whose networks were also set up by Siemens mobile. Thanks to the expansion order, more customers in the capital of Ouagadougou and along the main roads will soon be able to make calls to other major cities in Burkina Faso. Rudi Lamprecht, member of the Managing Board of Siemens AG, says: "The mobile market in Africa is growing steadily. Siemens mobile has the goal of driving forward business in this market and increasing mobile coverage in the region. We have been working successfully with Onatel for around seven years."

Burkina Faso, formerly Upper Volta, borders on the West African Sahara. The country has almost 12 million inhabitants and is three quarters the size of Germany. According to the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development), Burkina Faso is among the 22 largest national economies in Africa.

The Siemens Information and Communication Mobile Group (Siemens mobile) offers a complete range of mobile solutions including mobile devices, infrastructure and applications. Devices include mobile phones, wireless modules, mobile organizers and cordless phones as well as products for wireless home networks. The infrastructure portfolio includes GSM, GPRS and 3G mobile network technologies from base stations and switching systems to intelligent networks, e.g. for prepaid services. Mobile Applications cover end-to-end solutions for Messaging, Location Based Services or Mobile Payment. For fiscal 2003 (September 30, preliminary figures), Siemens mobile recorded sales of EUR 10 billion and employed approximately 26,900 people worldwide.
