Munich, Dec 18, 2003 - The leading Argentinean mobile operator Telecom Personal has commissioned Siemens to expand its GSM mobile network in Argentina. The Siemens Information and Communication Mobile Group (Siemens mobile) is currently setting up the mobile network in the Buenos Aires and Crdoba area for the mobile subsidiary of Telecom Argentina.

The order involves Siemens mobile delivering and installing mobile transmission and receiving systems (base stations) for the GSM 1900 radio access network of Telecom Personal. Furthermore the network infrastructure is ready to support the EDGE (Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution) technology. Thanks to EDGE the mobile provider will be able to offer high-value mobile data services in addition to voice.

The project with Telecom Personal in Argentina is another important success for us as GSM equipper in the rapidly growing Latin American mobile communications market said Christoph Caselitz, President of Networks within Siemens mobile. More and more mobile providers in Latin America have recently opted to deploy GSM, hence making GSM the fastest growing technology in this region.

With 2.5 million customers (31 percent market share) Telecom Personal is the largest mobile operator in Argentina. The company is a subsidiary of Telecom Argentina (100 percent), in which, among others, the Telecom Italia has a share of 27 percent.

Mobile telephony in Latin America offers enormous growth potential. All in all, over 110 million people in the region now use mobile phones; by the end of 2007 the figure is expected to rise to about 167 million (Pyramid Research). According to information from the GSM Association 84 mobile phone providers in 45 Latin American countries and the Caribbean have already decided to deploy mobile services based on GSM.

GSM is the leading mobile telephony standard in over 200 countries; 930 million users make GSM the most successful mobile telephone technology in the world. Considering the current growth rates it is expected that GSM will already account for one-third of the entire Latin American mobile market in the year 2006. Siemens mobile currently has more than 180 customers in over 90 countries, putting it in third place worldwide among mobile network suppliers.
