problem silencing alerts on Samsung 670

I have my ringer set to vibrate first and then ring. I set the alarm to silent. However, when I receive a voicemail, my phone rings! Anyone have a similiar problem or know how to fix this? I can't have my phone ringing in the middle of class, and I can't see turning it off all the time. Suggestions?
