The newest facility of Samsung is reportedly where the A5 chip of Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) is being manufactured. The A5 chip is being used on the current version of the iPhone of Apple, the iPhone 4S. Apple typically has Asian partners in the manufacture of their products since the supplies and labor is much cheaper in Asia compared to the United States, which would allow the company to increase its income.
With the new facility of Samsung, an important component of the iPhone 4S is now manufactured in the United States, specifically in Austin, Texas. The construction of the facility was reportedly finished recently and full production started sometime in December.
Most of the output coming from the facility is reportedly focused on producing the chips of Apple. The NAND flash chips are also produced by Samsung in Austin. Reports have indicated that the A5 processors for the iPhone 4S were supplied by Samsung to Apple this year although no statements were issued by Apple on the current arrangement with Samsung.
Aside from the iPhone 4S, the A5 chip of Apple is also used on the iPad 2. The A5 chip was first used on the iPad 2 of Apple and it is currently being used on the iPhone 4S. The A5 chip of the iPad 2 and the iPhone 4S is faster than the previous version of the chip.
The new facility of Samsung has around 1,100 employees working on the component for the iPhone 4S of Apple, which was a significant addition to the labor market in the area. Some reports have indicated that the number of jobs will increase if the SoC of the iPhone 5 will be produced by Samsung sine the demand for the reported next generation smartphone of Apple is anticipated to be high.
Even as the reports on the iPhone 5 have remained unconfirmed, sales of the iPhone 4S have continued to remain high as the device was introduced to more international markets recently.
