SCHAUMBURG, Ill., - 19 Jan. 2004 - Motorola’s advanced digital integrated communication system now offers the ability to support packet data. The Harmony system previously offered digital two-way radio and wireless telephone service. Now, it offers the ability to transport data as well as voice communications all integrated in on the same network. Additionally, the system can be implemented more rapidly than traditional wireless systems.

Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) introduced the Harmony Wireless Communications System (HWCS) in 2000 to meet the needs of commercial small market operators and business and industrial system owners who operate in the 806-825 MHz and 896-901 MHz bands.

The Harmony system leverages Motorola’s proven digital technology, iDEN®, to provide mobile work groups with fast, flexible communication services to help increase productivity, capacity and coverage while reducing overall cost. With the integration of packet data with the voice services, additional applications can be implemented on the network to further help improve workforce productivity. The ability to receive and update work order information, automatic vehicle location services, remote meter reading, distribution/automation services, and email are all examples of applications that can be deployed.

Users of the HWCS will be able to take advantage of compact and feature-rich subscribers, data terminals, and data modems, all of which have been tailored for use on the HWCS system.

A Harmony Packet Data Applications Partnership program has been established to qualify third party application and hardware suppliers to expand the suite of applications compatible with the HWCS solution. The inclusion of applications allows Motorola to deploy end-to-end, customizable, fully integrated solutions.

The Harmony wireless communications system is designed to help network owners minimize operation costs. Equipped with both a local management console and a remote access server, the system is accessible by operations personnel from anywhere through an enterprise LAN connection or over a standard dial-up. Billing and performance management files can be remotely downloaded. The system also helps to eliminate the need to maintain on-site personnel to support system operation.

The Harmony Mobile Switching Office (MSO) is the heart of the system. The MSO is comprised of the control and power cabinets that together have a footprint of about eight square feet. The control cabinet contains all the hardware and software necessary to support dispatch and telephone interconnect call processing, packet data, network and alarm management, and remote access. The power cabinet, an integral element of the system, provides an uninterruptible power supply.

Installation of the Harmony MSO can be accomplished in a matter of hours, enabling the system operator to be up and running in a relatively short amount of time.

The Harmony MSO is delivered from day one with the capability of supporting its maximum configuration of up to 50,000 users. However, the configuration of deployment is scalable from a single site system to a wide-area 120-site system. System expansion can be accommodated for subscriber, coverage-area, and capacity growth. Adding new sites and new base radios into the MSO’s system configuration can be accomplished in a matter of minutes, and the newly added components are available for service immediately.
