I began my service with Verizon with a Samsung phone which never caused me any problems but was stolen one night and without having the insurance on it was too expensive to replace. So, my sister-in-law gave me her old cell phone, a LG VX3100. At first I didn't have any problems with this phone at all. However, that was soon to change - all starting with a problem which continues to haunt me.

It began when the phone started making the tones that it is supposed to when you plug it into the charger and take it out, though it wasn't connected to anything at all. From there things just got progressively worse, the Send button stopped working entirely, pressing certain buttons would result in a string of different characters showing up, sometimes even sending it out as a call (e.g., by pressing the button 8 it would do something like *87243 and send out a call), text messages started getting rather strange - pressing the button for a space would put in not only a space but also the characters wm. The phone became pretty useless and I left it overnight at a Verizon store and was told it needed to be replaced.

I spent $50 to replace the phone, but they didn't replace the old battery. Soon the same chain of problems started to appear, beginning with the charging tones being made when it wasn't connected to a charger. I went back to the Verizon store, made a big stink, got no help, called the Verizon support number and finally got them to send me a replacement battery.

Now armed with both a new handset as well as a new battery I had hoped that my problems were over. However, after having them for just over a week, on my way over to a friend's house this evening my phone once again started making the tones for being connected to a charger, then not connected, then connected, not connected, etc., etc., etc. - oh and in case it matters the battery display also made the appropriate animations for being/not being charged going along with the tones, all while not being connected to a charger at all.

Please - if anybody has any ideas whatsoever as to what is going on here and what, if anything, I can do about it please let me know. I'm not sure how much longer I can hold onto my sanity!

Thanks!

A few questions. You have certainly had strange experiences with your VX3100s.

When you spent $50 to replace the phone, did they give you a new phone, a refurbed phone, used phone? It's odd that this second phone would not have had a battery with it.

When you took the 2nd VX3100 phone back into the store, did the Verizon tech actually see these things occur or did you just describe them to him? And how long a period of time had elapsed since you had gotten the replacement phone? A week, a month, a year?

Also have you put any software on the phone other than what it came with? Been connected by you to any other devices either by cable or wirelessly?

Have the phones been subjected to any unusual conditions: heat, excessive dust or smoke, overcharging, water, chemicals, dropping or rough usage, etc. ?

OK, it hadn't been very long before problems resurfaced, approx. 2 weeks or so. The only thing after the battery had finally been replaced before problems began showing up again. I don't know if Verizon had actually given me a whole new phone or if it had been refurnished, but I sincerely doubt if it was simply a used phone.

As far as it being subjected to any outside influences the only possibilities I've been able to discern are two things - 1) the same desktop charger, and 2) the fact that my AIM (AOL Instant Messanger) sends text messages to my phone. I don't know if you're very familiar with the VX3100, but it doesn't support much recent technology as downloadable ringtones or pictures of any sort. The heat may be a factor, life so far this summer has been very uncomfortable without having AC - sit in the bathroom for a couple minutes and you're covered with a sheen of sweat - same thing if the fan isn't directly pointed in your direction. However, I'm in Pittsburgh so other than the humidity level I doubt that the heat has reached much further than 95'F.

Once again, if there's any help you could provide it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Ray
