How long the extra battery lasts would depend on the conditions (cold, heat, moisture, etc) that it is exposed to but it seems like a reasonable alternative. Jerry-rigging a connector seems iffy, but if you think you can make a go of it, I'd be interested to hear the results. Definitely test it BEFORE he leaves. But I would also request of you, don't neglect to send the standard charger along. Where is he going to be staying at night? Even many campgrounds have electrical facilities into which he could plug a standard charger. Many batteries can receive a charge fairly quickly, so even a long lunch at a cafe might give him an opportunity to use the charger for a quick boost. Let us know how his trip goes. (I hope he has fun. It reminds me of a 3 day trip I took as a teenager, 50 miles out, a day of fun, and 50 miles back. Boy was that a while back!) Was he able to get service in some out-of-the-way places, or not? How did the phone perform under conditions of his ride?
