Verizon follows Alltel as a new vendor of this Kyocera wireless PC card.

Wireless data , which many observers are expecting to grow exponentially over the next 5 years, so far has had relatively few devices per carrier. As an example, Verizon which offers over 20 different phones has just 5 data cards, including this new one. The same is true for Sprint, the other US CDMA player in the EVDO arena.

Have you used this device on Alltel's network so far? Give Verizon users a preview of what they can expect from this latest offering in the data field.

Verizon Wireless has begun selling Kyocera Corp.'s KPC650 PC card for use on the carrier's CDMA2000 1x EV-DO network, which is currently available in more than 30 markets across the country. Kyocera said the device, which is backward compatible with Verizon Wireless' nationwide 1x network, provides users with network speeds of between 400 kilobits per second and 700 kbps of throughput with bursts of up to 2 megabits per second on the EV-DO network.

The Kyocera PC card, which was first launched by Alltel Corp. earlier this year, sells for $100 after a $100 mail-in rebate and two-year contract.

Kyocera also noted that the PC card includes an optimized antenna technology that independent testing conducted by Quality Partners showed provided an average of 35 percent to 50 percent higher throughput speed compared with EV-DO cards from Sierra Wireless and Novatel Wireless. Kyocera said the antenna design includes a dual-band diversity and a high-performance adjustable antenna plus internal antenna for both the 800 MHz and 1.9 GHz spectrum bands.

"We were confident that our unique antenna design and receive diversity would translate into the fastest performance, and it's very gratifying to see corroborating data from an independent third party," said Jim Kelly, executive vice president and chief operating officer at Kyocera.
