Verizon Wireless Cuts the Prices of the Palm Pre and Pix Plus
Verizon is now slashing costs for both the Pixi Plus and the Palm Pre Plus smartphones. In addition to that they are also offering free accessibility to a Wi-Fi service which allows the phone to deliver an internet signal to a lot of different types of devices, one of those being the new iPad coming from Apple.
Palm has actually really been struggling when it comes to being able to compete for consumers as they are flocking in droves to other devices like the iPhone from Apple and the Blackberry from RIM. This price cut is really indicative that they are realizing that and that there are changes that definitely need to be made. With the addition of the free service to the price cuts Palm Inc. is hoping that they are going to be able to grab some of the consumers that are looking for bargains.
Brenda Raney, a Verizon spokeswoman, talked about how Verizon was selling the Pre Plus for $150 and now it has slashed the pricing more than half and is selling the phone for $50 now. The same is the case for the Pixi Plus which experienced a price drop from $80, which it was selling at, all the way down to $30. For this pricing though it does require the two year contract.
Both of these devices are black and come with the touch screen and a standard QWERTY keyboard. The keyboard that comes with the Pixi Plus is one that is built-in the face of the device, the Pre Plus keyboard slides out from the bottom of it. Both devices run on the Palm Web OS software.
Currently Verizon is offering a free, although limited, use of the service which will let up to five other devices to connect into the Verizon wireless network through the phones which is what acts like a Wi-Fi hotspot.
There was a mobile hotspot utility that was available already as a free download from the Palm Application Catalog for use on the phones; however, Verizon was charging their customers $40 per month for 5GB of data use. Verizon is now offering their customers that 5GB of data usage for free.
