Playing iTunes Songs on your LG Verizon Phone via a microSD Flash Card
LG makes some pretty slick music phones including the LG Chocolate and the LG Dare. However, iTunes remains one of the most extensive and most widely used online digital music stores that more or less puts VCast Music to shame. Plus, if you’re consolidating your iPod library into your brand new Verizon music player phone, you’ll definitely want to move your purchased music over to your phone. Here’s a quick tutorial on how to do just that:
Formatting your microSD Card
LG phones load up songs via the microSD card, which is great because it makes it easy to transfer songs between devices (such as your computer) to your phone. Plus, you’re not limited to the capacity of the internal memory (flash cards can get up to 32 GB). But in order to get your microSD card to play nice with your Verizon phone, you’ll have to format it.
(For this example, we’ll use the LG Dare – but the process is the same for almost all LG phones.)
1. Insert the microSD card into your phone.
2. Open up the “Menu” and choose “Settings and Tools.”
3. Select “Memory” and choose “Card Memory.”
4. Press “Options” and choose “Format.”
5. If prompted, enter your 4-digit lock code. (By default, this code is the last 4-digits of your mobile number.)
6. When prompted, say “Yes.”
There you go. Now, your card will be setup with Verizon’s preferred folder structure. Pop the microSD card into your computer and you’ll see:
- media
- my_flix
- my_music
- my_pix
- my_sounds
Converting your iTunes Songs
Your iTunes songs will most likely be in M4a format (especially if you purchased them from the iTunes Store). LG phones can read a variety of formats, but the most widely recognized is Mp3. To convert your songs from M4a to Mp3, open up iTunes and click “Edit” and choose “Preferences.” In the “General” tab, choose “Import Settings…”
In the next dialogue, choose “MP3 Encoder” under “Import Using.” Under setting, go for “Higher Quality.” Click OK to save your settings.
Now, find the songs you want to convert, highlight and give them a right-click. Choose “Create MP3 Version…”
iTunes will create MP3 versions of your songs and put them in your iTunes library folder. If you’re having trouble finding them, right-click the song in iTunes and choose “Get Info.” The full-path will be listed next to “Where.”
Moving Your iTunes Songs onto your LG Phone
Now, with your microSD card inserted, open up Windows Explorer (or Finder) and navigate to the location of your converted iTunes songs. Open up another window and browse to the “my_music” folder on your microSD card (i.e. E:\my_music). Simply drag your songs from your iTunes library to your my_music folder – but make sure that they sit in the folder itself and not in any subfolders.
Load up your card into your LG phone and then open up the music player. Your phone will detect the songs and add them to your phone’s library.
(Note: The songs remain on the card and will not be physically transferred to your phone. To play your music, the card must be inserted.)
