Why Is microSD So Popular In Cell Phones?

The term microSD refers to the smallest of Secure Digital’s data storage cards used extensively in cell phones. About a quarter of the size of the standard SD card, the microSD card has a thickness of about 1mm and weighs around half a gram, making it an ultra-portable means of transporting and storing data. The light and compact nature of the microSD card lends itself well to integration with a wide variety of cell phone models, with over 75% of cell phones shipping with a microSD card in 2009. MicroSD cards are also compatible with a range of GPS navigators, portable audio systems, and console gaming devices.

Despite its compact and lightweight nature, the microSD card’s technical specifications are still on par with larger cards like the miniSD and standard SD card. Like the miniSD card, the microSD has no moving parts, making it ideal for handling the shocks and handling issues associated with cell phone data storage. The microSD’s optimal data transfer rate of 100 Mbits/sec is also on par with the miniSD and can match most standard SD transfer rates. As the technology has improved, the amount of storage available for microSD cards has increased, with capacities now ranging from 64Mb to 16Gb (a 32Gb model is expected to emerge in 2010).

Most cell phones nowdays have slots for microSD cards, which can be used to store all types of data including music, photos and contact information. These slots are usually accessible from the outside, allowing more convenient card removal than older models using standard SD. However, the tiny size of the microSD often sparks fears about it being easier to misplace one’s card: one of the few drawbacks of the microSD’s portability.
