What Is The CTIA?

The Cellular Telephone Industries Association (CTIA) is a specific industry trade group founded in 1984, and based in Washington, D.C. The main purpose of the CTIA is to represent wireless telecommunications companies by government lobbying and helping to pass various communications acts.

The CTIA was responsible for the Electronic Communications Privacy Act and the Telecommunications Disclosure & Dispute Resolution Act — both of these laws were passed solely within the United States. While some of the telecommunications laws that the CTIA attempts to pass affects wireless users across the globe, the CTIA is largely a U.S. based non-profit group.

The CTIA board consists of manufacturers, data companies, wireless industry giants, and service providers. In addition to making the interests of various wireless companies publicly known, the CTIA also works to improve consumer wireless choices. Various programs (such as wireless AMBER alerts) have been implemented with the help of the CTIA.

There are many different departments that make up the CTIA including external and state affairs, general counsel, government affairs, and public affairs. Both wireless companies and consumers may contact the CTIA with any matter concerning wireless communications.

Essentially, the main goal of the CTIA is to expand the definition of “wireless.” The group consistently attempts to bring unique services and laws relating to wireless communications to the attention of the United States Government, as well as to the American wireless community as a whole. Whether lobbying governments or supporting consumer-based ideas, the CTIA is largely instrumental within the wireless world.
