What Is Sony Ericsson?
Sony Ericsson is, unlike what many people might think, not a single company but a joint venture of two. Japanese electronics giant Sony and Swedish telecommunications leader Ericsson entered the partnership in October 2001 in order to better deal with the traditional leaders in the cell phone industry like Nokia and Samsung. The Sony Ericsson venture sought to combine Sony’s expertise in consumer electronics with Ericsson’s industrial know-how in cell phone technologies, and both companies ceased to manufacture their own cell phone models following the joint venture. Sony Ericsson has gone through difficulties in the past, most notably a confidence crisis from Ericsson in 2002, but is now one of the foremost cell phone companies worldwide.
Sony Ericsson’s technological and branding synergies have been crucial in its ascent to consumer popularity. The most famous Sony Ericsson model, the T610, was one of the first cell phones to incorporate a host of multimedia technologies including a colour screen, Bluetooth and an inbuilt digital camera – features which were revolutionary in 2003 when the T610 was released. Sony Ericsson’s reputation for innovation and strong R&D implementation has been continued with models ranging from the K750i and its 2-megapixel camera to the Vivaz’s HD video-recording capabilities (scheduled for release in First Quarter 2010). Cross-branding has continued to be a key factor in Sony Ericsson’s sales strategy, most apparent in the highly popular Walkman Phones produced by the joint venture.
Along with a focus on portable multimedia content in its cell phones, Sony Ericsson has recently placed emphasis on the environmental creddentials of its products. Some of the venture’s initiatives include an annual Sustainability Report and “Greenheart” technology which claims to reduce cell phone CO2 emissions by 15%.
