What Is Enhanced 911?
Enhanced 911 (also referred to as E-911 and E911) is an emergency response system that works within North America. When a cell phone user dials 911 within North America, the call is then routed to the closest Public Safety Answer Point (PSAP) according to the caller’s physical address. In addition to automatically detecting a caller’s address, E-911 also allows emergency crews to identify a caller without extracting this information from the caller.
E-911 is important when a person cannot speak with a 911 operator. By simply dialling 911, operators are able to find out the name of a subscriber and the location of a cell phone. Within moments, emergency crews can reach a person in distress using the E-911 system. This system has been instrumental in helping kidnap victims, fire victims, and victims of break-ins. While E-911 works rather well within North America, this system does not necessarily work in other countries.
In addition, a call must be placed to 911 directly in order to Enhanced 911 to work. Calls placed to other emergency systems may not be as advanced as E-911 is. Ever since the implementation of E-911, emergency crews have been able to reach cell phone callers quickly and efficiently. Emergency 911 is a standard cell phone feature that comes with most cell phones on the market today. Keep in mind that E-911 will not work when traveling outside of North America, so it’s important to make note of emergency numbers in other countries while travelling.
