Top 5 Windows Mobile Smartphones

Windows Mobile is the successor to PocketPC 2000 and it’s designed to bring all the productivity, document handling, email, messaging and web connectivity offered by Microsoft’s desktop OS into a compact, portable operating system. Today, Windows Mobile smartphones rank as the third most popular platform for business users trailing behind BlackBerry and iPhone. The current version is Windows Mobile 6.5, but Microsoft is poised to blow the doors wide open later this year with Windows Mobile 7, which is expected to give its competitors a serious run for their money. If you’re looking forward to the new Windows Mobile operating system and want to be prepared for the upgrade, it’s best to choose an excellent Windows Mobile phone now so you’ll be ready for the new software once its released. Here are our picks for top Windows Mobile smartphones.

1. LG eXpo

The LG eXpo is known for its uncanny ability to integrate with a DLP Pico projector to project a 40-inch viewing screen of anything that’s displayed on the phone’s gorgeous 3.2 inch touchscreen. Need to put on a PowerPoint presentation for the board meeting? Want to setup an impromptu movie theater in the airport terminal? With the LG eXpo, it’s no problem. But aside from the LG eXpo’s novel projector capabilities, it’s one of the best Windows Mobile phones to date. Running Windows Mobile 6.5 Professional edition beneath LG’s S-class user interface, navigating the eXpo’s many features is a breeze. You get two QWERTY keyboards – a physical one and a virtual one – and 5-finger multitouch navigation. The Smart Sensor technology also identifies your fingerprint, allowing you to block anyone from accessing sensitive information on your phone except you. Packed with WiFi, Blueooth, 3G and a 1 GHZ Snapdragon processor, this phone has plenty of muscle beneath he hood, too. All in all, the LG eXpo has some of the best hardware we’ve seen in a Windows Mobile phone and a great user interface to boot.

2. Samsung Omnia II

Samsung Omnia II has plenty of unique features to offer the Windows Mobile world. The first thing you’ll notice is the brilliant AMOLED display touch screen, which creates a sharper, brighter picture than LED screens while consuming less power. The next thing that will strike you is Samsung’s TouchWiz 2.0 interface that overlays Windows Mobile 6.5. The left side of the screen is dedicated to numerous widgets which you can drag and drop to one of three customizable home screens. TouchWiz 2.0 also lets you zip between applications for seamless multitasking. The keyboard is the other standout feature on the Samsung Omnia II. As a departure from the touchscreen QWERTY keyboards, the Samsung Omnia II packs the Swype keyboard interface that lets you type without lifting your finger. With practice, this predictive technology can churn out more words per minute than the typical iPhone user can. The Samsung Omnia II also shines as a multimedia phone and has 3G speeds, integrated WiFi and Opera’s stellar web browser preloaded.

3. HTC Tilt2

The HTC Tilt2 is the sequel to one of the most popular HTC Windows Mobile smartphones. This upgrade now runs Windows Mobile 6.5. The namesake tilting screen is an ample 3.6 inches wide and allows you to easily view videos or webpages and type on a desktop. It also has seamless support for Microsoft Exchange with Direct Push support for real time email updates. HTC’s TouchFlo 3D interface also makes for a very attractive user experience that brings all the vital details front and center while the HTC Multi-Tab lets you multitask with ease.

4. HTC Imagio

The HTC Imagio bills itself as a multimedia smartphone with business capabilities. This Verizon phone has access to V Cast Mobile TV which looks great on the phone’s expansive 3.6-inch touchscreen. You also get HTC’s TouchFlo 3D user interface, which adds value to Windows Mobile 6.5’s navigation and overall functionality. The kickstand in the back lets you prop up your phone to be viewed hands free on a table, making it highly conducive to watching videos or browsing web pages. The camera has 5-megapixels and a built-in camcorder and an intuitive touch focus mode which is very similar to the iPhone’s camera.

5. HTC TouchPro2

The HTC TouchPro2 and the HTC Tilt2 are very similar. The main difference is that the HTC TouchPro2 comes shipped with Windows Mobile 6.1, but can be upgraded to Windows Mobile 6.5 via T-Mobile. The HTC TouchPro2 also has a tilting screen that slides away to reveal a QWERTY keyboard. The one leg up that the HTC Touch Pro2 has over the HTC Titl2 is the 3.5mm headphone jack, which lets you use any standard set of headphones with your phone.
