The Federal Government to Double the Available Wireless Spectrum
It looks like the Obama administration is going to back the plan for the doubling of the wireless spectrum. This is the space that’s available on the airwaves for the wireless and high-speed internet traffic. This is to be able to help pickup and keep up with the increasing demand for the video and other progressive applications on both mobile devices and laptops.
A short while ago President Obama made a commitment that the federal government is going to be freeing up more broadband radio spectrum, an additional 500 megahertz of it. This is going to occur throughout the next 10 years. Most of this spectrum is going to be auctioned off to the different wireless carriers. Currently there is about 500 megahertz of spectrum being held by the wireless industry but they aren’t quite at the max yet.
The memorandum which came from the White House marks an official endorsement for one of the key proposals that’s come from the FCC and their national broadband initiative, which is to work toward providing all Americans with high speed internet accessibility. The plan was released back in March and it envisions wireless technology as an essential component of making that happen. This is even more so the case in the more rural areas where it’s usually simply uneconomical for landline networks to be built.
Additionally the FCC wants to free up additional airwaves in order to stave off what they say could be a future and serious shortage of spectrum. This is more likely in the dense urban places where there are so many more Americans that are now using their smartphones to get on everything from Facebook or getting directions while they’re on the move. In order to make sure that we’re able to remain competitive as well as our leadership in global technology simply depends, at least in part, to that of the additional spectrum. The world is becoming more and more wireless and America shouldn’t and can’t be left behind.
Part of the memorandum is calling for the public inventory with the airwaves that are currently being used by the government as well as commercial users and make sure that the entire spectrum is being efficiently used. The efforts would then be able to work toward identifying the spectrum that would be able to be re-purposed.
This and other spectrum is going to be auctioned off and the administration is hoping that billions of dollars will be raised through the auctions. The money would then be invested in things, such as:
• Deficit reduction
• Investments in high speed rail
• Infrastructure projects other
In addition to that it will work to build a wireless broadband network which would allow the firefighters, police officers and any other emergency personnel to be able to communicate with each other.
When you look at it from any side it’s a win for every American. It’s something that’s going to drive investment, drive innovation and create jobs.
