Does Global Roaming Really Work?
If you don’t travel much, you might not have ever heard of global roaming, but it’s out there for people who want to use it. With global roaming, you get one SIM card that you use in your phone all over the place. Of course, there are always places in the world where it won’t work because there simply isn’t any cell phone service there, but that’s to be expected of any phone. What you can do with global roaming, though, is buy one phone and one card and not need to worry about buying different ones for countries that you travel to. It’s a great convenience, but convenience always comes at a price. The minutes are often used up very quickly with global roaming, and the per minute charges can be quite high.
If you buy a card for minutes you normally pay just a set amount for the card itself, not for a set number of minutes. Some places you visit might cost you 10 cents per minute, and some places might cost you 50 cents per minute or even more. With that in mind, it’s important to be aware of the fact that you could run out of minutes much sooner than you expect, depending on where you are. You should always have extra minute cards with you if you’re going to be doing a lot of traveling where you use global roaming, and check ahead to the countries you’ll be visiting to see what kinds of rates you’ll be paying.
