CES 2010 Smartphone Highlights
The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2010 is upon us and many of the top tech producers are unveiling eyebrow raising smartphones. It’s just day one of this momentous convention, but we’ve already seen some buzzworthy items. Here are a few of our favorites:
Motorola Backflip
The first quarter of 2010 brings us the Motorola Backflip, a singular smartphone running Google’s Android 1.5 (but slated for an upgrade to 2.1). It’s got a 528-MHz Qualcomm MSM 7200A processor, a 5 megapixel camera, WiFi, 3G and a 320×480 screen. But the unique thing about the Backflip is that, when it’s closed, both the QWERTY keyboard and screen both face outward. What’s the point of this? It turns out it has lots of applications – prop it up in a v-shape and it works like a digital picture frame, an alarm clock or a tiny little movie screen that you can stand up on the table.
Netgear 3G/4G/WiMax Router
What’s a router have to do with cell phones you ask? It’s all about the technology that it taps into. WiMax is the technology that Nextel uses for its 4G network and it’s the direct opponent to LTE, Verizon’s version of 4G which is still waiting in the wings (it could be like the battle of HDDVD vs BluRay all over again). That means WiMax just might be here to stay. But another cool feature – you can plug your smartphone into the router and turn it into a wireless hub for all your laptops and computers. It’s like broadband tethering, but for any computer in range.
BlackBerry Presenter
Research In Motion has an answer to the much buzzed about LG eXpo, North America’s very first projector phone. Meet the BlackBerry Presenter. This little sidekick to the quintessential business phone/PDA lets you deliver PowerPoint presentations directly from your phone via Bluetooth. You can kick the image to a projector or monitor via a video cable. That means you can leave your laptop at home for your next business trip.
A Fleet of Android Devices
Also joining the flock of exciting new products launched at CES 2010 are numerous new Android devices. Dell announced that it’ll be releasing its Dell Mini 3 to North America through AT&T, which, as we mentioned earlier, was originally only available in China and Brazil. Also, Lenovo joins the fray with its LePhone, another Android handset offered by a computer manufacturer (though this one will only be released in China for now). HP also has a conceptual model of a Mini Android smartbook and Spring Design announced an Android-powered e-reader with WiFi, 3G and two displays.
CES 2010 has just begun – we’ll be sure to keep you posted as more exciting smartphones are announced.
