Cell Phones For Seniors: The Jitterbug
The Jitterbug is a cell phone designed especially for seniors by Jitterbug Wireless, a California-based cell phone company. Jitterbug cell phones place great emphasis on simplicity and accessibility of design, being marketed at a wide range of seniors including the visually impaired, mentally ill and those unaccustomed to modern cell phone technology.
The original two Jitterbug models were the Jitterbug Dial and the Jitterbug OneTouch, both of which are still available from some providers today. The Jitterbug Dial’s clamshell design has a very large number-pad and Yes/No buttons instead of the typical Accept Call/Deny Call buttons, but otherwise physically resembles a typical clamshell cell phone. Menus and calling options have been calibrated to assist the visually impaired, with large-size fonts and backlit keys complementing prompts at each step of dialling a number. The Jitterbug OneTouch is even simpler: the cell phone does away with a traditional keypad in favor of three buttons: one to call an operator, one to call “Home” (a reprogrammable number), and one to call 911. Each rubber button can be located on feel and is easy to be depressed, making the phone one of the easiest to operate. Both the Jitterbug Dial and Jitterbug OneTouch have received industry accolades for their accessibility and innovation.
Jitterbug Wireless’ latest cell phone model is the Jitterbug J, which builds upon the original Jitterbug Dial’s design and feel with improved call quality and new features like text messaging and missed-call lists. However, the phone’s relatively high retail price of $147 has been criticized by some industry members as being a stumbling block for seniors’ budgets.

There are a lot of additional services targeted at seniors as well, such as roadside assistance, live nursing advice and daily heart health tips.
The only Jitterbug phone I find questionable is the One Touch. Even seniors know how to use push button phones, so I don’t see the point of not including a dial pad.
