BlackBerry Madness: Evolution of a Smartphone

Ah, the CrackBerry – the one phone that started the smartphone craze. The BlackBerry was originally created in order to provide businesspeople from around the globe instant and constant access to email. Then, the rest of the world caught on to BlackBerry’s many talents, and within the blink of an eye the BlackBerry market boomed.

It’s funny to note how the first BlackBerry – released in 1998 — was really nothing more than a two-way pager. The first BlackBerry was the RIM Interactive Pager 950. This gadget weight 3.95 ounces, and measured 2.5 inches by 0.93 inches. Back then, the fact that the BlackBerry allowed users to create messages that were 16,000 characters in length was amazing.

When the year 2000 rolled around, BlackBerry introduced the RIM 957 Wireless Handheld. This was the first BlackBerry to resemble today’s BlackBerrys design-wise, though the functions available on the 957 were quite different. Essentially, the 957 allowed users to access email, paging, calendars, and the Internet.

It was not until 2002 that BlackBerry turned its email and pager device into a phone –that’s right, the BlackBerry wasn’t capable of voice until 2002. The BlackBerry 5810 allowed users to email, page, use calendars, surf the Internet, and talk all at once, but this phone came with the hefty price tag of $749.

As the years went by, the BlackBerry evolved slowly but surely. Users became addicted to BlackBerrys easy interface, web browsing capabilities, and extensive data upgrades. Today, the BlackBerry Storm 2 has gained an extensive amount of press, since the Storm 2 has the first clickable touch screen.

Yes, the CrackBerry has come a long way since its humble inception in 1998, and those that have had the chance to experience the BlackBerry are devoted to this company’s knack for ingenuity. It’s hard to say what BlackBerry will come up with next, but it’s safe to bet that BlackBerry will be around for many more decades to come.
