AVL and GPS – Automatic Vehicle Location

Most people know what automatic vehicle location (AVL) is, they just don’t think of it under that name. They probably call it GPS, and they probably have it if they own a newer cell phone. Most of these newer phones have this AVL technology already installed on them, so you don’t need to ask for it. You can just buy the cell phone you want, and get this technology in the form of GPS. It works by linking cellular technology with a small tracking device. If you make a call from your cell phone to 911, for example, and you don’t know where you are, GPS, or AVL, can find you. That can help get someone to your location if you’re hurt or if you’ve been in an accident or been the victim of a crime. AVL can’t always pinpoint your exact location, but it can get close enough that the police can find you.

A lot of companies also use this kind of technology to track their heavy equipment, their drivers, and their workers, because it tells a dispatcher or a home office where they are. That helps to ensure that these people are working when and where they say they are. In today’s fast-paced and technologically-advanced world, AVL is almost becoming a necessity for companies that need to keep track of their people and their equipment. While most people think it’s the same thing as GPS, AVL is usually designed more for commercial applications. It is basically the same kind of technology, though, and works on the same principle.
