Google Ion

In late 2008, the T-Mobile G-1 with Google was released, and for the first time users were able to get a look at the Android operating system.  Recently, T-Mobile released its second Android OS smartphone, the Google Ion (also known as the HTC Magic).  The Ion improves greatly on the G-1’s design and comes with the updated version of Android which is ready for T-Mobile’s 3G network.

Probably the biggest change G-1 users will notice when they first pick up the Ion is the lack of a physical keyboard.  The candybar/slider design has been replaced with a smoother-edged touchscreen design that looks more appealing, weighs less and feels solid in the user’s hand.  The touch screen is 3.2 inches wide and has excellent quality and clarity, with adjustable brightness and backlighting settings.

The user interface of the Ion will be immediately familiar to G-1 owners, with the same ease and functionally of its predecessor, just updated and streamlined.  On the homes screen, which is divided into three easily manipulated sections, users can add numerous shortcuts for their most frequently used applications in the configuration of their choosing, allowing for a most customized interface.

As one might expect, the Ion comes ready with many excellent Google applications, such as You Tube, Google Talk, Picasa photo upload, G-Mail, GPS that works with Google Maps and of course, Android Market, where users can browse and shop for new applications.  Other features include a USB port, stereo Bluetooth, video recording and playback.  For fans of T-Mobile’s G-1, the Google Ion is a big step forward.
