What Is Boost Mobile?

Boost Mobile is a cell phone service provider which was founded in Australia and New Zealand in 2000 and moved to the USA in 2001. The Boost Mobile brand is now a division of US telecomms giant Sprint Nextel, providing consumer-oriented plans to complement Sprint Nextel’s traditionally business-focussed corporate model. In order to address a wider range of consumers, Boost Mobile offers two types of Prepaid plans, Monthly Unlimited and Pay As You Go, for both traditional cell phones and Blackberry devices. The Monthly Unlimited plan includes unlimited talk, nation-wide text, web and walkie-talkie service; the plan proved extremely popular when re-released in 2009 at the price of $50 per month, causing SMS delays of up to a month across the network due to the unexpectedly large uptake.

Apart from its consumer-oriented cell phone plans, Boost Mobile has a strong focus on rich media cell phone content, providing popular extras such as apps, ringtones and games on its frontpage. The brand’s emphasis on youth culture and fun has manifested in both its promotion strategies and no-contract plans. In the US, Boost Mobile Community has a range of media content including interviews, events and links to social media outlets. Similarly, Boost’s Australian division employs incentive systems such as extra credit for completing surveys and an I-Owe-You facility for customers to quickly get access to emergency credit.

The US Boost Mobile network operates primarily on Sprint Nextel’s iDEN network, although CDMA coverage has been available since mid-January 2010. The range of cell phone models for CDMA is substantially smaller than that of iDEN-compatible phones.
