What is Palm?

Palm, Inc. manufactures various smartphones including the Pre series, Treo, Centro, and the original Palm Pilot. Palm is located in Sunnyvale, California, and was erected in 1992 by founder Jeff Hawkins. Palm’s primary mission was to create a series of personal digital assistants (PDAs) for consumers to use on a regular basis.

With the development of the Palm Pilot, Palm Inc. made a name for itself. The Palm Pilot was one of the first smartphones, and it proved to be an enormous success. Palm still manufactures various smartphones including the Pixi, Pixi Plus, Pre, and Pre Plus, though the company was purchased by U.S. Robotics Corp in 1995.

In 2008, Palm Inc. decided not to manufacture any new PDAs, and instead the company chose to focus on its new Palm Pre line. Palm Pres operate on the WebOS system, which is a type of advanced web operating system. Presently, all of Palm’s smartphones run on the WebOS system, and they are the first smartphones to use this system.

While Palm made a deal with Sprint to exclusively sell the Palm Pre smartphone, when the Palm Pre Plus was introduced in 2010, Verizon Wireless gained exclusive rights to the updated smartphone. Even though Palm Inc. has gone through many ups and downs throughout its manufacturing career, the future of Palm Inc. looks rather promising given the fact that both the Pixi Plus and Pre Plus are making a strong impacting within the smartphone world.
