Free Government Cell Phones, Millions of Americans Unaware Of Free Cell Phone Options

Approximately 8-million Americans in need have already received a free government cell phone, along with an allotment of monthly minutes. This is all thanks to a program that’s not known enough, and this government programs are called Link-Up and Lifeline. It’s estimated that there are approximately 22-million Americans that are eligible for the free government cell phone program, however, they’ve never signed up for it. What is the main reason for this you might be wondering, it’s because they likely simply don’t know it even exists.

There’s an old adage, and this is one that doesn’t apply to the Lifeline program, which is: “If it sounds too good to be true, it most likely is”. There are 34 states that have rules that vary slightly. Additionally, the program is also supported in Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia. Generally speaking though, people will qualify if they are already in an aide program at the state or federal level. This includes the following:

  • Medicaid
  • Public Housing
  • Food Stamps
  • Other

An additional qualification is if the total household income is either at or below 135% to 150% of the specific state guidelines of the federal poverty level.

Everyone that is in the United States and owns a phone (either landline or mobile) pays for the federal Lifeline program. The program was originally established in 1997 by the FCC in order to provide every American with quality and affordable telephone service. The charge is listed as the USF (Universal Service Fund) fee, with just pennies being added to each cell phone and landline bill on a monthly basis. All those pennies add up, as they turn into billions of dollars of funding for the Link-Up/Lifeline program annually.

There are three certified major companies in their respective states, with some states certifying more than one of the companies, with those three companies being:

  • Assurance Wireless
  • ReachOut Wireless
  • Safelink Wireless

All three of these companies are marketing the phones aggressively, not only in English but Spanish as well. The marketing is paying off as the program is beginning to catch on. There have been countless numbers of people who have been helped by the free government cell phone program, including unemployed, single parents, homeless and disabled persons.

Even with all of the people that have been helped, there’s still a long way to go with the Lifelines free government cell phone program to get service to the millions in need that aren’t aware of the service. Only more recently have there been companies that have begun to offer an alternative to the landline by offering mobile phones to those that are in need. Owning a cell phone is no longer the luxury it once was; cell phones are a vital tool for communication and for emergency situations.

The free government Lifeline cell phone program is one of the best kept secrets in America. Not only are eligible Americans able to get their free cell phone, but they’re able to get as many as 250 airtime minutes each and every month, completely free of charge.

Part of the goal here at Cell Phone Plans is to get the word out to the low-income Americans that are eligible for this program, and as many of those people as humanly possible. If you have any questions, we answer as many as we possibly can, including helping with qualifying information, and where to send your application and how you can apply if you should need help.
