What is Rogers?
Rogers Wireless is owned by Rogers Communications Inc., which happens to be one of the largest communications companies in all of Canada. Rogers Communications is based in Toronto, Ontario, and it is one of the oldest wireless companies in the world.
Rogers Communications began as Rogers Vacuum Tube Company during the early 1960s. When the company purchase Aldred-Rogers Broadcasting in 1961, communications became the company’s biggest focus. Today, Rogers competes with Bell Canada on the wireless front, since Bell Canada also offers various telephone and wireless services.
In November of 2004, Rogers purchased Fido (another wireless company), which made Rogers the largest communications company in Canada. As a response to Rogers’ acquisition of Fido, Bell Canada purchased Virgin Mobile Canada, though Rogers still remains the largest wireless communications company in Canada.
Rogers Wireless won many Canadian customers when the company obtained the first rights to the heavily awaited Apple iPhone 3G and the iPhone 3GS. Presently, Rogers also offers the BlackBerry Bold and the BlackBerry Curve. Rogers was also the first company in Canada to offer Google-Android devices including the HTC Magic and the HTC Dream.
As a wireless company, Rogers is immensely popular throughout Canada. For many consumers, Rogers is seen as the only alternative to Bell Canada. This, coupled with the fact that Rogers seems to gain the most important exclusive contacts, has gained Rogers a large consumer following. Rogers is set to launch the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 in 2010 (once again, ahead of its competition).
