The Basics of CDMA2000
You may have heard of CDMA, but you might not have heard about CDMA2000. Are they related? They are, to an extent: CDMA is the method of data communication and transfer which underpins CDMA2000, a family of 3G standards for cell phones. In essence, CDMA is a technology, while CDMA2000 is a brand name, one applied to certain mobile standards used by the CDMA Development Group (the body which supports CDMA cell phone technology worldwide).
So why is CDMA2000 so important? As both the first and foremost 3G standard to be implemented in cell phones, CDMA2000 serves almost half a billion cell phone users in over 110 countries worldwide, providing not only high fidelity audio quality but also the capacity for broadband data transfer that typifies all types of 3G technology. At the moment, CDMA2000 consists of two standards: the CDMA2000 1X standard (introduced in 2000, the earliest for any such 3G standard) and CDMA2000 EV-DO (short for Evolution: Data-Optimized, introduced in 2001). The two standards complement each other, with CDMA2000 1X catering primarily to voice calls and audio data while CDMA2000 EV-DO is optimized for data transfer in wireless networks. Features of the CDMA2000 family include high call capacities (over 35 calls per cell phone sector for 1X) and extremely fast data rates (up to 3Mbps in peak conditions).
While 4G standards are expected to eventually eclipse CDMA2000, the CDMA Development Group intends to continue augmenting the cell phone standards in the near future. The group forecasts quadrupling increases in call capacity and data speeds by 2012: a good sign for cell phone users as the number of 3G operators and phones continues to grow.
