TetherBerry Rebranding, Moving into Android Territory

Earlier this week, we took some time to discuss how to tether your Verizon phone to your laptop using Mobile Broadband Connect. After reading this, some of your probably wondered, “Hey, I’ve already got an unlimited data plan with my BlackBerry. Isn’t there a way to tether my BlackBerry for free?” The answer is yes. Yes you can. In fact, soon, you’ll be able to tether more than just a BlackBerry for free.

TetherBerry has been long loved by CrackBerry addicts who wanted to use their BlackBerry’s data connection to get on the Internet with their laptops without shelling $30+ a month to Verizon or AT&T. This handy little app lets you do exactly that without hacking your phone or voiding your cell phone contract (at least not for now). You get 3G broadband speeds on your laptop without having to pay $9.95 for a WiFi access daypass or getting one of those clunky PC cards. Plus, it works with Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, Nextel and any carrier that has BlackBerry phones. (Just watch out for those overage fees, if you don’t have an unlimited data plan.)

But now, TetherBerry has announced that they are changing their name to just plain “Tether.” Why drop the berry? Simple – it’s because their expanding. You can already sign up for the Android beta of Tether, which will allow you to tether your HTC Hero or HTC Droid Eris or any other Android phone without paying tethering fees.

For anyone who has a BlackBerry and wants to give it a shot now, you can go ahead and download the app from the BlackBerry App World. You’ll also have to install the software on your computer, but compared to the process it takes to jailbreak an iPhone, installation of Tether is relatively painless.

Tether is compatible with all models of BlackBerry, including the BlackBerry Storm, the BlackBerry Curve, the BlackBerry Pearl and the BlackBerry Bold.
