Samsung Jack vs. Samsung Epix
The Samsung BlackJack was a hit among business-ready messaging phones, inspiring its successor, the Samsung BlackJack II. Now, the BlackJack line has diverged somewhat into the Samsung Jack and the Samsung Epix. Both of these phones are largely inspired by the Samsung BlackJack but there are a few differences.
Samsung Jack
The Samsung Jack retains the crowd-pleasing QWERTY candybar design, but smooths things out a bit to take on an appearance similar to the BlackBerry Curve. To that end, it is very much like a BlackBerry – it’s a quick phone for emailing, viewing Microsoft Office documents and it has WiFi, 3G and Bluetooth. It runs Windows Mobile 6.1, but it can be upgraded to Windows Mobile 6.5 for free. It also has a 3.2 megapixel camera and a self-portrait mirror. There’s no 3.5mm headset jack but it comes with an adapter.
Samsung Epix
The Samsung Epix also has Windows Mobile 6.1 and an upgrade to Windows Mobile 6.5 is coming soon (February 2010). The Epix, however, gets an optical mouse and a touchscreen for navigation. The Jack, on the other hand, gets arrow keys and no touch screen. The keyboard on the Epix is also a little bit harder to use – the keys are spaced out and a stiffer to the touch. The camera on the Epix is also 2-megapixels, compared to the Jack’s 3-megapixels. The Epix has a slightly larger battery than the Jack, but their rated talk times are the same and the standby times are comparable.
All in all, these phones are very similar. The Samsung Jack has an overall better look and feel but lacks a touchscreen. But considering that your thumbs will be spending most of their time on the physical QWERTY, it may not be much of an issue. The Jack also gives you a better camera and a more immediate update to Windows Mobile 6.5.
