Palm Pre vs iPhone
On June 6, 2009, a new device will enter the market to take on Apple’s iPhone— Sprint’s Palm Pre. The Pre is Palm’s answer to the iPhone, and is considered to be the most direct challenge to Apple’s dominance over the touch-screen smartphone market.
Some of the biggest differences between the Palm Pre and the iPhone have to do with background applications and cut and paste functions. The iPhone will not allow users to have applications running unchecked in the background, as its creators say it too negatively impacts battery life. Not only will the Palm Pre run “multiple activities”, as they call them, but will also allow users to view and combine multiple calendars from Outlook, Exchange, Google and Facebook intelligently, deleting cross-calendar schedule conflicts. While the iPhone recently developed cut and paste and MMS messaging functionality for its forthcoming OS 3.0, those programs must be implemented, while the Pre will come equipped with these functionalities.
Perhaps the biggest advantage Apple has in this smartphone battle is the vast number of applications that already exist for the iPhone. The Palm WebOS is a new platform, and will have to play a lot of catch-up before it will have as many applications available as the iPhone. Gaming will be another concern, as Palm has already confirmed that the initial gaming on its WebOS platform will be “very basic”.
Buyers will have a difficult time choosing between the purchase of a new smartphone, or updating their existing iPhone with its OS 3.0, available soon after the release of the Pre.
