Most Popular Cell Phones: November 2009

With Black Friday and Cyber Monday kicking off the holiday shopping season, November is always a big month for cell phone sales. This month, we saw an interesting mix of full QWERTY phones, Web OS phones, 3G phones and multimedia phones. Let’s take a quick look at some of the most popular cell phones for November 2009.

BlackBerry Pearl

The BlackBerry Pearl 8100 represents a slight departure for Research in Motion, the company that’s known for making the addictive CrackBerry that keeps business people glued to their work around the clock. The Pearl, however, walks the line between PDA and a slim smartphone. There’s no actual QWERTY keyboard – but you can pound out just as many word per minute with the SureType keypad. The Pearl was such a hit that BlackBerry has since rolled out some upgrades: the BlackBerry Pearl 8120, which has WiFi capability and works on T-Mobile’s numerous HotSpots and the BlackBerry Pearl 8130 that brings GPS to the table.

Palm Pre

Palm made a controversial move when they chose to stop pushing Windows Mobile Palm phones, like the Palm Treo 700wx and start using exclusively webOS. The popularity of Palm Pre proves that the masses have gotten used to it and even actually like Palm webOS quite a bit. It’s built for touch screens and lets you multi-task, view streaming video in RTSP, H.263, and H.264 formats and, best of all, webOS will be one of the platforms that will (finally) support Adobe Flash.

Samsung Exclaim M550

The Samsung Exclaim M550 is the ultimate shoutout phone. With a dual-slider that reveals a slick QWERTY keyboard and awesome messaging and media features, this phone lets you keep in touch and look cool doing it.

Another hot Samsung cell phone is the Samsung Impression A877.Consumer Reports highlighted the Samsung Impression when it was released, noting it for its “bright and clear display” that comes compliments from its one-of-a-kind active-matrix organic light-emitting diodes (AMOLED), which is really just a fancy way of saying it gives superior image quality without sucking down the battery.

LG Xenon and LG Neon

LG brings two other AT&T slider cell phones to the table  – the LG Xenon and the LG Neon. While these two phones both have names from the periodical table, they don’t have a whole lot in common. Yes, they both have a full QWERTY slide out and are great for web browsing and messaging. But the LG Neon is conspicuously smaller, it’s touch screen only works with the phone dialers. The LG Xenon, on the other hand, has 3G support, a fully functional toucfh screen and quad-band support. Both, however, are free!

T-Mobile Sidekick Slide

I think failing to call this the “T-Mobile Slidekick” was a huge missed opportunity – but it’s not my job to name cellphones. Anyway, this phone has a very cool design – the screen slides up to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard. It’s smaller than its predecessor, the T-Mobile Sidekick and has 3G speeds, GPS quad-band support and a 2-megapixel camera.
