Link between Brain Cancer and Cell Phone Use Inconclusive

Those cell phone users that are worried about getting brain cancer can rest a little easier but can’t eliminate their concern yet. There has been a major international study into the linkage of the use of cell phones and two different types of brain cancer have as of yet proved inconclusive.

The study ran for a 10 year period of time and took in around almost 13k participants. The study found that most cell phone use didn’t actually increase the risk of people to develop:

  • Meningioma – a common and most always benign tumor
  • Glioma – fairly rare but it is a much deadlier form of cancer

The suggestions were that someone that uses a cell phone for at least 30 minutes or more every single day could increase their risk of getting glioma. The authors of this WHO cancer research study though stated that there could be some biases and errors prevent a simple casual interpretation that could be directly blamed for the radiation for the tumor.

The call times of a longer duration appear to pose a much greater risk than the total amount of calls made do. This would make sense as the more time you spend on the mobile phone would expose you to much more radiation then a number of calls of short duration.

There were some factors that weren’t looked at and among those were the effects of someone using a hands free device or just having a cell phone near them even when they aren’t making a call like having it on the dresser or desk during the day or keeping it in the pocket.

Also there are some plausible inaccuracies as the participants were asked to rely on their memory about how much and the ear in which they were using their cell phone over the last ten year period. Some of the group’s results actually showed that cell phone use actually appeared to lessen the group’s risk of cancer development. This is something that the researchers described as completely implausible.

The Need for Further Research

The authors of the study stated that there is much more investigation needed before they would be able to conclude with any certainty that there is absolutely no link between the radiation present from cell phones and brain cancer. Part of the reason for this is that the levels of usage have spiked considerably since the time of this studies start back in 2000.

The scientists plan is to examine the risks of tumors in both the acoustic nerve (ear) as well as the parotid gland which is where saliva is fashioned. There will be a separate study involving children which is a group that is deemed to be more susceptible to the effects of radiation exposure.

The paper took into account research from thirteen different countries but nobody in the United States and found that of the 12,848 participants 5,150 of them had one form of the tumor, either the meningioma or the glioma.
