Dell Continues Expansion into Mobile Space
Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday that Dell Inc. plans to reorganize its business group to launch a “bigger push into mobile devices.” According to the news report, Dell will create a new communications division headed by Ron Garriques, who previously worked at Motorola, which released the popular Motorola RAZR V3m and the Motorola ROKR U9.
This announcement comes shortly after Dell rolled out its first smartphone ever, the Dell Mini 3i and the more powerful Dell Mini 3iX, which bears the name of its highly acclaimed netbook that competed with the likes of the Gateway LT2016U netbook and the HP Mini netbook. The Mini 3i and Mini 3iX run Android, joining the ranks of other early adopters of Google’s mobile OS such as the T-Mobile G-1 and the Samsung Moment. Dell is also releasing a tablet, called the Dell Streak, which runs Android 2.0.
Unconfirmed rumors have also indicated that Dell plans to roll out a Windows Mobile phone. Currently, phones like the Samsung Omnia II and the HTC Tilt 2 have dominated the smartphone space when it comes to Windows Mobile phones. This doesn’t mark the first time that Dell has developed a Windows Mobile device. Dell first introduced the Dell Axim, a PocketPC PDA running Windows Mobile, in 2002 but discontinued the line in April 2007. Dell’s renewed efforts – this time with a seasoned mobile devices executive at the helm – just might prove some stiff competition for the likes of Samsung and HTC.
Our advice: keep your eye on Dell. If the change they bring to the mobile phone space is anywhere near on par with what they did for the customized personal computer, the cell phone sector is in for quite a shakeup.
