Consumer Reports: Top Smart Phones
Consumer Reports recently released its rankings of the best rated smart phones by carrier according to extensive survey of subscribers. According to Consumer Reports, Verizon’s best smartphone is the HTC Touch Pro2, the successor to the earlier HTC Touch Pro, which is still available (at a lower price). Consumer Reports was also a big fan of the BlackBerry Storm 9530, BlackBerry’s first touchscreen phone.
As for T-Mobile, Consumer Reports chose the My Touch 3G, which is an interesting choice, since T-Mobile also carries the HTC Touch Pro2. Consumer Reports also picked the Samsung Memoir as a hot T-Mobile phone thanks to its best in class 8 megapixel camera. Unsurprisingly, the iPhone wore the crown as the best AT&T smartphone, but the magazine also liked the LG Xenon, the Samsung Solstice and the Samsung Impression. As for Sprint, Consumer Reports decided that their best smartphone was the Palm Pre, touted for its Web OS that lets you multi-task with several apps at once.
All in all, Consumer Reports concluded that “America is in love with the cellphone, but the yare lukewarm about cellphone service.” That’s unsurprising, since cell phones – especially smartphones – are becoming more and more sophisticated with ever more features. However, with these features come higher cell phone plan prices. And with more people hopping on the 3G network, EDGE or EV-DO, there’s more strain on the entire network, which means more congestion, more dropped calls and more quality of service issues. So, you end up with a combination of higher prices and shakier service. For now, it seems that cell phone plans and mobile handsets are in an adolescent phase, not quite caught up with its own growth and changes. Hopefully, a more reliable network is on the horizon so we can use our spiffy smartphones to their full potential.
