Bike Powered Handset Launched By Nokia

Do you want to keep talking more? If so you should keep on pedaling. The largest mobile phone manufacturer in the world launched a set of lower priced handsets with a recharger that can be connected to a bikes dynamo. This is what will charge your phone as the wheels are turning.

The bike, handsets and the charger kit, are aimed mostly at the user that has limited electricity access. There are some that have standby battery time, some of which is up to six weeks of time.

These new devices are going to be available in the second half of the year and be at a price point of around $36-$55.

A dynamo, holder to secure the phone and a charger are included with the bike kit. The dynamo is a small electrical generator which uses the wheels movement in order to charge the handset through a 2mm standard charging jack which is used in most of the Nokia handsets. The charging will cut off when the speed gets lower than 3mph.

The kits price will be starting at $18 in the emerging markets and will most likely cost more in the other markets.

The least expensive of the new phones is the Nokia C series C1-00 and is projected to be at the $36 price point. This is also going to be the first model and will have a 2-in-1 double SIM cards.

Through just pressing down a key the user can switch in-between the SIM cards. This is something that is perfect for the international traveler as they can take advantage of the reduced calling rates and the flexibility when they are going from one country to another. This is something thacell phone planst also helps with a family that shares a phone so they can still use their own SIM card.

You’ll get an up to six week battery time and you get a radio and a flashlight. For that reason this phone is also aimed highly toward the regions where there is a scarcity of electricity.

The Nokia C2 has a $55 expected price and also has the dual SIM with a standby option that actually keeps both of the SIM cards active. This is something that means that either calls or texts can come to both of the numbers at the same time so long as the handset is on. There is one card that sits underneath the battery while the other card is able to be removed without having to turn off the phone.

You can also get storage from micro-SD cards as well as 32GB of memory for your music, photos or other data.

Nokia has gotten really strong competition in the higher end smartphone market recent. Three of their main competitors are:

  1. Blackberry from RIM
  2. Google’s Android
  3. iPhone from Apple

Most of their competition though has come in the United States as they have managed to continue to maintain their global lead position.

They took the lead in 1998 as the top handset manufacturer and last year they sold 432 million phones. Nokia is base out of Espoo. Espoo is near Helsinki and they employ over 126,000 worldwide.
