Best Cell Phones for Seniors

There are cell phones for executives, cell phones for families, even cell phones for babies (although they may not actually call people). But what about cell phones for seniors? Once neglected by the big cell phone companies, senior citizens now have a range of phones to suit whatever lifestyle they choose to lead. These phones all have improved ease-of-access and usability to cater for both tech-savvy seniors and those who’d rather send a letter through the post office. Here are three of the best cell phones for different groups of seniors:

Samsung Jitterbug J

for the aging citizen

The Jitterbug has outdanced the competition to become one of the most well-known phones for seniors around. Why? The answer lies in the simplicity of the phone’s design, especially calibrated towards ease-of-access for the elderly. The Jitterbug J has large backlit keys which make dialling numbers a breeze for even visually-impaired seniors, as well as crisp sound quality for those who find themselves a bit hard-of-hearing. The interface is also designed for simplicity of use, with Yes/No buttons clarifying matters for those unaccustomed to all the bells and whistles of the modern age. For the ultimate in ease-of-access, there’s the older Jitterbug One Touch. This model has only three buttons: one to call 911, one to call a designated family member/neighbour/friend, one to call operator. The only catch is that the Jitterbugs are expensive: the Jitterbug J has a MSRP of $147.

LG VX3100

for the tech-savvy senior

Inexpensive and simple to operate, the LG VX3100 provides strong functionality in a highly accessible package. Although it doesn’t have a color screen, the VX3100 still packs a highly legible display and adjustable font-size for greater visibility. The phone has the usual SMS and speed-dialling capabilities, as well as mobile web access for the more tech-adept senior. Note though that the battery life is bit weak – up to 210 mins talk time according to specs – and the phone doesn’t ship with a travel charger. However, the VX3100 remains an excellent choice for seniors with a busy lifestyle and a bit of technological know-how.

Casio G’zOne

for the young-at-heart

It’s ugly but it won’t let you down. That’s the premise behind UTStarcom’s Casio G’zOne, a rugged well-built phone that can survive basically everything – whether it be a dunk in the bathtub or a holiday in the freezer. The phone’s plastic chassis and rubber stoppers give it a high resistance to shock, dust, temperature variation and impact stress. It also boasting extremely fast PTT response-time and raised keys which make it easy to dial a number by feel rather than sight. And the G’zOne’s VZ Navigator system allows adventurous seniors to easily track where they are and how to get to where they want to go. The durability of the G’zOne makes it a prime choice for the active senior as well as any grandparent who’s ever accidentally put a phone through the wash.

Just as with all cell phones, the market for seniors is ever-changing and adapting. We’ll keep you posted as new and improved cell phones for seniors emerge.

A phone from Just 5 (www.just5.com) could be considered a better alternative. Their phones are unlocked quadband phones available for use on any network that uses SIM cards. They are full featured but only with necessary features such as an SOS button for emergencies, a FM radio, large easy to see and press buttons, loud, clear voice and ring volumes and a swith on the side of the phone for locking and unlocking instead of having to enter a code. See all the features at http://www.just5.com

Tracfone Senior Value Cell phone is the cheapest cell phone for seniors on the market at the moment selling for only $15. It has larger letters on the screen and buttons and is a hearing aid compatible flip phone.
You can buy this phone at k-mart, Pamida (mid west), Meijer and Shopko.
The Tracfone plan is also costing seniors only $7/month for service so it really is cheap for pensioners to afford.
The reception is really good because the major networks are used.
For Seniors who are battling to put food on the table, pay rent and pay their medical debts this phone and it’s monthly plan sure keeps the costs minimal.
