Are Free Cell Phones Really Free?
As the old saying goes, there’s no such thing as a free lunch. There are always strings attached. So when you are trying to compare cell plans and find free cell phones, the same rules apply. However, the good news is, those “strings” attached to free cell phones aren’t bad at all. More often than not, the “strings” actually benefit the consumer in many ways. Here are some basic facts about free cell phones to keep in mind when you compare cell plans:
The Contract: The most common way companies offer free cell phones, is by asking the consumer to sign up for a multi-year service contract. This is a good option if you’ve used a certain service provider in the past and are happy with their coverage and service. However, if you want to upgrade your phone you will have to pay for it out of pocket. Some companies will offer a phone upgrade midway through the contract, but it will not cover 100% of the phone, and the consumer will be responsible for the difference.
The Rebate: Another way to get free cell phones is via a rebate offer. When you compare cell plans, see if their free phone requires that you apply for a rebate. This involves filling out a small amount of paperwork and then mailing it into the company. This process can take a few months. The cell phone company makes money on this deal when a person forgets, or neglects to send in their rebate coupon. So, don’t fall into that category and be sure to send in your rebate coupon.
The Rates: Some cell phone companies will charge consumers more for minutes and other services, in exchange for free cell phones. Be sure to read the fine print or ask specific questions of your customer service representative when you compare cell plans.

Thanks for tips. However, I would like to point out that you don’t necessarily need to sign a contract to get a free phone that’s quality. I work with a company called Consumer Cellular http://www.consumercellular.com, which offers a free phone — the Motorola W259 – along with a no-contract cellular plan that starts as low as $10 a month.

When companies like Net10 and Straight Talk offer free phones I think they are usually the models that are slightly older,or I get the feeling they want to move excess stock or just boost sales of their plans. What do you guys think?
I always take advantage of these free phones as long as you buy the prepaid plan with it. They make great presents for kids, birthday prezzies for friends and family even for the future months to come.
