Senior Citizens Aren’t Big Cell Phone Users, Even In Emergencies – Yet
A new Jitterbug phone, which is designed with the senior citizen in mind, might make the difference of the senior’s aversion to using a cell phone even when an emergency comes. The phone comes with big numbers and is very easy to use.
The new cell phone from Jitterbug has been introduced with the distributors saying that the target is for the baby boomer and the baby boomer’s parents, the senior citizen. The statement is that the Jitterbug features unparalleled simplicity.
The announcement has some good timing as information coming out of the Pew Research Center shows that senior citizens aren’t ones to frequently use cell phones, if at all, even when emergencies come up.
How Americans Use Their Cell Phones
The cell phone has been converted into one of the most integral and to some the most essential tools of communication that has helped their owners in case of an emergency. A total of 74% of the Americans that own cell phones have at one point used them for an emergency in order to get the help that they need. On the lower end though are the senior citizens where the percentage drops to 64%.
One other striking impact that cell phone technology has had is that the American population is using their cell phones to shift the ways they spend their time. Right about 41% of cell phone users state that they will use their cell phone to fill the gaps of time when they are waiting for something or someone or when travelling by making phone calls, text messaging, games or other.
The senior citizen on the other hand will only use it 20% of the time during their free time.
That being said there are still some challenges that are associated with cell phone usage. Over a quarter of all the cell phone users admit that they don’t drive near as safely as they should when they are using the cell phone. Among all the cell phone users 32% of men admit it while 25% of women admit that they don’t drive as safely when using their cell phone. There is no statistic available for seniors in regards to this.
For some people the cell phone is so central to their communications needs that they are losing track of the money that their cell phone is costing them. Of the cell phone users 36% of them have at least once been really shocked by the size of their monthly bills but the seniors are a little less surprised coming in at 23%.
