Safety Phones a Senior Safety Project
When it comes to the safety for a senior citizen a safety phone is something that is essential for a senior in order to call 911 should there be an emergency.
For a senior to have a cell phone even if it isn’t activated is something that is useful still. It’s actually a federal law that every single cell phone be 911 active even should the cell not be affiliated with any cell phone carrier. This means that any old cell phone can still be an invaluable resource for a senior to know they can dial 911 if there is an emergency.
What Is a Safety Phone?
The objective of a safety phone is to be able to augment the safety of both seniors that are victims of crimes or those seniors that could be at risk to become a victim of a crime through being able to dial 911 through the use of a cell phone. The purpose of the safety phone is for that person to be able to dial 911 when faced with any kind of emergency.
Using a Safety Phone
Using a safety phone is something that is done when the senior is confronted with any type of emergency and needs to call 911. Any call to 911 is routed automatically to the 911 dispatch center for the police, fire as well as medical agencies that serve the area that you’re making your call from.
A safety phone isn’t a phone that is setup to do anything other than calling 911. A safety phone also doesn’t receive any incoming calls. You should only be turning on your safety phone if you need to test the battery or to use your safety phone to dial 911 for an emergency.
Charge the Safety Phone and Ensure It’s Working
The cell phone will have a battery indicator on the screen of the phone that should be visible on both the inside and outside screen which is going to tell you how much battery life there is left for your phone.
When the battery indicator of your safety phone shows that there is less than 50% remaining power it is time to charge your phone. Make sure that you leave it until it is fully charged and make sure that the safety phone is plugged into a working outlet.
Practice Using Your Safety Phone
One very important thing is to practice using the safety phone through holding down the power button until the phone turns on. To practice dialing though you should be using 611 instead of 911 as you don’t want to call 911 as it’s an emergency only number.
After you’ve put in the numbers you will want to push the green key which is labeled either talk or send. If you hear a recorded message it means that your phone is fit and ready to be able to dial 911. Turn off the phone after you’ve done this to conserve the battery power.
Key Reminders
Be sure that you always carry the phone with you when you’re going out and make sure that you keep it beside you when you’re sleeping so you can have it during the night. You want to make sure that the phone is with you at all times.
Don’t have the expectation that you’re phone power is always going to last a full day if you’re leaving it on and make sure that you’re not leaving in a hot car as that is a surefire way to quickly deplete the life of your battery. You want to make sure that you pay attention to the battery indicator of your phone so you always know how much power is left and if you need to charge it.
If when you practice using your safety phone you don’t get a message your phone might be broken. Before assuming that though try it in another area to see if it is just poor reception.
You should make sure that you’re always aware of your surroundings and being safe. You should make sure that you’re practicing on occasion to make sure that your phone is working and do so in the places that you go to often to make sure that you’re in practice as well as have a working signal.
A safety phone may save your life and make the difference but just having it isn’t a guarantee of personal safety and you should always take the measures needed to make sure that you are safe. There is always the chance the phone might not work in an area or during inclement weather.
Using 911
When you need to use your safety phone to call 911 make sure that you explain the situation as calmly as possible and tell them where the help is needed. Make sure that you stay on the line with the dispatcher ads they will help you through the situation and send the help that you need.
