Cell Phones for the senior in Your Life, Choosing the Right One
When it comes to the seniors in our lives all of them should have a cell phone. Choosing the proper cell phone for a senior though is something that makes sure that they are connected no matter where they are, no matter what time.
As we begin the aging process things like our eyesight as well as our manual dexterity begin to deteriorate. For many of the senior citizens the cell phone is something that can be extremely frustrating as almost all of them have the very small keypads and screens. You also don’t want to make mention that there is also an overwhelming array of technology option types.
Let’s be honest up front, there’s not going to be any one cell phone that’s going to fit the needs of every single senior. There are some seniors that are going to be more comfortable with technology than others, there are others that are going to require more enhanced levels of visual or audio capabilities. There are others that prefer a much simpler design. Keeping that in mind let’s go over some tips that should be considered when you’re picking out a cell phone for the senior in your life.
Decisions On Primary Usage
One of the decisions that you’re going to have to make is what is the primary usage going to be for the senior that is using the phone. Is the phone going to be used primarily or just for emergencies should the senior need to contact the 911 operator or just a limited amount of family members if something happens. Does the senior in your life travel either internationally or interstate? It’s these types of questions and more that are going to impact the way that you’ll be making your decisions on your plan options.
Test Multiple Phone Models
Rather than succumbing to the temptations to find something and order it online you should go into a store and try out many of the different phones. For the most part the seniors who have problems with the dexterity or their eyesight aren’t gong to want a phone that has a small screen, a small keypad or the touchscreen options which are on so many of the popular smartphones, like that of the iPhone and others. The phones that have the larger buttons which have back-lighting and clear markings are going to be the ones to go with. Additionally you’re going to want to look at the phones which have options for a speakerphone as well as easy to use menus. These are going to be what the majority of the senior cell phone market segment are going to want.
Phone Suitability
There are companies out there like that of Jitterbug which have phones specifically designed with the senior in mind but you don’t necessarily have to go with a company other than your own to find something. But the one thing to keep in mind is you need to try to find a phone like that of Jitterbug’s offerings. Jitterbug’s offerings offer phones which are very easy to use, have the larger screens, have hearing aid compatibility along with a simple-to-use volume adjustment feature. If you don’t find an option with your current cell phone carrier there is another option and that is Firefly. Although those are marketed primarily as a cell phone for kids they offer those same simple-to-use features which are so important to almost all seniors. You’ll also find the option for some pay as you go. There is definitely no lack of options out there, you just have to make sure that you take the time to look and find the best option for the senior in your life.
Payment Plan Option Considerations
One final consideration that you need to make is that of your options on payment plans. If the cell phone isn’t going to be used very often than the prepaid plan could suffice. If the phone is going to be used more frequently to use as the main source to talk with grandchildren and other family members then you should be looking into the adding of a line of your existing family plan. This is going to be a much cheaper option than getting them a plan of their own. You’re the one that knows the senior in your life better than anyone, so just take this information into account and what you know about the senior in your life and find the best possible phone and the best possible plan option. Regardless of what you go with them having a cell phone will help to ensure their safety, above all else, that’s the most important thing.
