Some More Signs That the iPhone is under Attack from Android
There are more signs that iPhone is under additional attack from Google’s Android phones. There is a growing list of research groups that state that the Android phones are now outpacing the iPhone and you can now add Nielsen to the research groups.
According to reports that came out of the Los Angeles Times, the Nielsen group found that out of the people that purchased a smartphone in Q1 and Q2, 27% of those purchased an Android phone while only 23% of them purchased an iPhone. RIM, the maker of the Blackberry, and their phones beat out both the iPhone and the Android phones according to the Times article.
The study of Nielsen’s also supports some similar findings from the NPD Group. The NPD Group reported back in May that the iPhone was surpassed by the Android in Q1. There is no lack of qualifiers in the Nielsen study.
A couple of things, firstly, the numbers don’t reflect the sales in July which was the first complete month that the iPhone was available for people to purchase. Additionally, the Android operating system is on many phones, not just the single phone like the iPhone. Those include the EVO from Sprint as well as the Droid X from Motorola and so forth. This means that the iPhone isn’t being compared to a single phone but a whole lot of them.
There are some that argue that the Apple iPhone is holding its own against the other individual phone makers but the Nielsen findings are still really positive to add to the additional pile of news for Google. Google is one of the major rivals for Apple.
The market research group Canalys stated today that the shipments of the Android smartphones throughout the world during Q2 are up an astonishing 886% from the year prior.
In just the United States, as one example, there’s been the largest carrier, Verizon Wireless, who’s been heavily promoting the higher profile Android devices like the HTC Droid Incredible, Motorola Droid and so on. With all of the problems going on with the Apple iPhone 4 lately you can expect even more ground to be made from those that were thinking about picking up the Apple iPhone 4 and decide to pick up an Android phone instead.
